About us
The Dojo
Grey Duck Karate is in the Minnehaha neighborhood of Minneapolis, run by Stuart Hazard and Sam Young. They are experienced martial artists and teachers who are happy to have their own school to build a strong, supportive community of students. We train in a spacious 1,900 sq. ft. gym at Minnehaha United Methodist Church, featuring great sprung floors and high ceilings, perfect for large classes and seminars.
Our Instructors
Stuart started training in Okinawan karate in 1973 and taught until 1999, achieving a 3rd degree black belt (Sandan). In 1999, injuries halted his practice. He returned to training in Shotokan karate at the Kitsune dojo in Minneapolis in 2015, earning a 1st degree black belt (Shodan). He has also trained in various martial arts with the Minnesota Kali group. Stuart focuses on personal empowerment and effective self-defense in his martial arts practice.
Sam started training in Shotokan karate at the U of MN Morris Karate Club in 2008. After graduating, he joined the Midwest Karate Association in Minneapolis and co-founded Kitsune Karate, where he earned his 1st degree black belt (Shodan). He has also trained at various Aikido dojos and in Brazilian jujutsu. Sam focuses on personal growth, effective self-defense, and fundamental movement principles in martial arts.
Our Karate Culture
We have dedicated years to training and enhancing karate, which we take seriously. We believe karate should be fun and energetic. Be ready to try new things, learn different approaches, and enjoy your training, even if it means sweating a bit. We focus on setting personal goals with a coaching mindset, a proven way to sharpen skills in sports. A
